My appreciation of ''La Sagouine''

To be true, I’m not a big theater fan. I often go watch movies and such, but theater? When i entered the Segal center, i thought at first that i was at the wrong place and was kind of lost.. Finally I just followed a bunch of old white haired people into the theater and finally found my seat. When the play began, I was surprised by how well Viola Leger was playing her role as the Sagouine. So much that I had difficulties figuring her outside her role. The story she was telling was interesting, especially the part when she talks about her identity as an Acadian and the differences between them and us, Quebeckers. Even though I had problems understanding what she said, I quite enjoyed it and it made me wish to go see more plays.

  1. Survey

The way that the federal government manage and spend tax-payers’ money has always been in the mist of debates in Canada. With the recent election campaign which started in end of March 2011, the different political parties had the opportunity to show the Canadians how they would manage the federal budget. In that context we thought it would be a great idea to ask our fellow Canadian citizens what would be their main priorities for the next federal budget.
We did a research about the 7 topics we chose as the more important departments of the Canadian government. It includes the health system, national defence, education, economy, culture, environment and social services. The information was easy to access because of the present elections and all the Medias that were talking about it, but we had to be careful to take only the true information from everything we found. First of all the health system is one of the biggest budget eater in the country because of the free access that is given to every citizen of Canada. The health system is currently compromised by the recent grow of the private sector in the health industry. National defence comes first in terms of money spending by the government. It employs more than 120 000 people from around the country. It’s main roles are to assure the defence of the Canadian territory, give humanitarian assistance throughout the world and also participates into combat missions such as in Afghanistan. The education system, though it is the provincial responsibility to manage, expects the federal government to provide financial support to students such as scholarships and student exchanges in the country. Economy department is expected to manage financial institutions, job creation and reduce the national debt. The ministry of culture is there to support cultural institutions that help our artists keep on creating and entertaining us. Culture is always a great part of a nation identity and a lot of people seem to forget that. The ministry of environment will keep an eye for the conservation of the nature in the country. It will make regulations for industries to protect our water supplies and the ecosystem. Social services enhance our lives in a lot of ways. It will create entertainment for families, such as building arenas, pools and libraries. It will also help Canadian citizen that are in need of help, such as providing food banks and welfare.

  2. The question of our survey was: ‘’what are your main budget priorities?’’. Though it was hard to predict what would be the answers of the people we interrogated, our hypothesis was that the health system and education would be the priorities of most. We asked persons that were aged between two groups: one of the was composed of young adults between 15-20 years old and the other group was people from over 40 years old. The results were quite what we expected they would be. 25% answered that the health system should be the priority of the government. A little less answered that education should be the top priority in the federal budget and 17% answered that the economy should be prioritized over other departments. National defense came last with only 4% of the votes.

In conclusion we thought that our hypothesis was biased by our personal opinions because as youngsters we think the health system and education should get all the support it can, while older people had more interests for economy and social services. But finally the results of our survey showed our hypothesis to be true. The only thing we would have done differently would be to get a sample on national scale with more than just two groups of ages.
